Termite extermination and control:
Ohioans get excited for warmer weather after a long winter. Unfortunately, this is also a good time to inspect for signs of termites as they typically begin showing signs in the spring/early summer. Although not as common as other states, Ohio is home to termites. The most common termite we deal with in Ohio is the eastern subterranean termite. Termites are part of the wood-destroying insects’ group. They live in the soil in colonies and can find ways into homes and wooden structures. According to the EPA, termites do not pose a health risk to humans, but they can cause thousands of dollars of damage to wooden structures and eat through books in classrooms. Unlike carpenter ants, termites eat wood and other wood products like paper. Termites can cause a considerable amount of structural damage and require expert treatment.
Types of termites in Northeast Ohio:
- Subterranean Termites
- Drywood Termites
Why are termites dangerous:
- They cause structural damage to homes and buildings
- Termites cause silent damage that is usually not seen inside the home
- Damage may not be seen for some time after it is too late in many cases
- Termites are difficult to eradicate and can cause thousands of dollars in damage
How do termites get into the home:
- The most common way is from wood to ground contact
- Mulch around the foundation of the home
- Wet framing and other wet wood structures like deck posts
- Cracks in foundation and framing
- Fallen trees, tree stumps, or wood debris near the home
Signs of a termite infestation:
- Mud tunnels or tubes they create on foundation walls or between cracks in wood (Ohiohistory.org)
- You see termite swarmers (winged males and queens) inside the structure
- You notice narrow, sunken winding lines, or sunken areas, in wallpaper, paint, or other surfaces (msstate.edu)
Termite extermination and control:
Termites are not something that you should try to DIY or tackle on your own. Termite infestations are a serious issue that needs to be left to a pest control company that is specifically licensed and experienced in dealing with termites.
